Tracking the hurricane from our automobile, as we coursed on Route 70 North from
Orlando to the Panhandle, our emotions ranged from fear, to excitment, to foreboding
concerning the danger in the zig-zagging ominous hurricane. Carol and I work for the
Orlando Weather Information Service. I am a video photographer, whereas Carol loves to
write. We observed the random course of Mother Nature, encompassing the horizon with a
dark, treacherous atmospheric phenomena, heading for the hurricane pathway which thereby
warned us of the indomitable forces that Mother Nature would release. Orlando skirts
hurricane effects frequently, but Northwest Florida experiences the anger of Mother
Nature. White sand beaches, and clear water draw the innocent into their lear like Daniel
and the Lion. During Spring Break a multitude of students invade Panama City Beach, Fort
Walton Beach and Pensacola. Escaping midterms, exams, studying and parents urging to
complete their college experience, students party hardy, by drinking, swimming, dancing
and general enjoyment of the exception weather of the Panhandle. What would happen if by a
strange weather change, caused by global warming or an El Ninyo effect, Hurricane season
occurred during Spring break? Worldwide temperatures affected by global warming have
increased, given temperatures in the summer in France, Germany and other countries above
100 degrees Farenheit. How would local authorities, the Sherrif, and police handle the
masses of students?
These thoughts crossed our minds as we approached Gainesville, the site of the
University of Florida the largest student population in the country. "Hurricane
reports state the path of the storm is Northwest Florida, " said Carol, "we must
tape that course with the microwave receiver equipment!" "All setup, " I
responded, with trepidation, given our purpose is to track the eye of the storm! On Route 70 we encountered
400 mile an hour winds!
